Das walte Wotan
After Odin’s outburst of fury. This glacier is heavily covered with debris. The still bulged terminus shows that the glacier retreat began just recently. The thick debris layer protects the glacier from rapid melting in summer. However, appearances are deceiving. The ice not covered by debris appears very dark compared to the freshly fallen snow. Therefore this ice surface warms during summer leading to accelerated melting. Hence, one of the key factors to protect glaciers from melting is regular snowfall during summer.
