Lightning strike. Wizard Island is a re-grown lava dome in the center of Oregon’s Crater Lake. Bristlecone pines are growing on top of this peak. Their location is extremely exposed in terms of lightning strike probability and most of them were already struck. These very old trees demonstrate that life on a volcano peak is absolutely possible. When measured in geological time scales the lifetime of a tree is clearly less than a blink of an eye.
