Costa del Sol
Sun coast. In February 1993 this icy bay drifted southward with its floe a few hundred kilometers from the North Pole. In Fram Straight near Svalbard the pack ice is already highly fractured due to the swell coming in from the northern Norwegian current. The open ocean surface appears deep black compared to the floes. Large colliding floes with a size of 300 m at air temperatures of minus 40°C create vertical walls of ice called hummocks with a thickness up to 7 m.
